Marley House |
|
Horatio James "Bud" Marley and his wife Nancy Texas Lewis Marley built this home in 1906. This was the
last home they built together as Mr. Marley died December 30, 1907 on his 62nd birthday. They raised 9 children,
John William, James Edward, Mary Jane, Robert Green, Joseph Oscar, David Caswell, Suwannee Elizabeth, Nancy Foy
and Everett.
Mr. Marley had a rich heritage of service to our country. He served as a Private in Company H of the Alabama Volunteers
in the Confederate Army. His great-great uncle Richard Caswell, on his mother Charlotte "Chelley" Caswell's
side, was the first Governor of North Carolina and a General in the Revolutionary War. One can only imagine the
historical changes those living here faced in the early 1900's.
Many years have passed and several families have lived in this wonderful home Bud and Nancy built. The lawns are
graced with magnificent Oaks, Magnolias, a century old Pecan tree and many lovely mature Camellias and Rose of
Sharon. The Marley House was on the Westside Garden Tour
this year and many enjoyed walking the grounds and reminiscing on the "good ole days" when everyone knew
their neighbor and a visit on the front porch enjoying conversation and iced tea was a frequent custom. I love
entertaining friends and strangers who become friends and look forward to having you come and sit with me on my
front porch.
